چکیده

Salt produces free radicals in the plants and these free radicals are scavenged by the antioxidative capacity of the plant. Change in antioxidant activity, phenolic contents, lipid peroxidation, glycine betaine and proline contents were investigated in fifteen genotypes of wheat differing in salt tolerance. The results revealed that the aqueous extracts of wheat (300 μg/ml) in control and under salt stress (i.e. electrical conductivity, 2 EC, 4 EC, 8 EC and 16 EC) demonstrated antioxidant activity in DPPH radical assay and their increased scavenging percentage showed that AUQAB-2000, PIRSABAK-05, BAKHAR-2002 can be considered as salt tolerant varieties. The change of phenolic content suggests that wheat uses antioxidant properties of phenolics as a mechanism of salt stress. Whereas, the lipid peroxidation, proline and glycine betaine data has indicated that AUQAB-2000, PUNJAB-85, PIRSABAK-05, BAKHAR-2002, FARKHARE-SARHAD and KAGHAN-94 can be considered as salt tolerant varieties. Salt tolerant varieties also showed higher amount of yield at different salinity levels. These results indicate that these cultivars of wheat alleviate the deleterious effect of salt stress by their antioxidant activity and increased production of proline and betaine.

Exogenous Proline and Glycine Betaine Mediated Upregulation of Antioxidant Defense and Glyoxalase Systems Provides Better Protection against Salt-Induced Oxidative Stress in Two Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Varieties

The present study investigates the roles of exogenous proline (Pro, 5 mM) and glycine betaine (GB, 5 mM) in improving salt stress tolerance in salt sensitive (BRRI dhan49) and salt tolerant (BRRI dhan54) rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties. Salt stresses (150 and 300 mM NaCl for 48 h) significantly reduced leaf relative water (RWC) and chlorophyll (chl) content and increased endogenous Pro and inc...

Exogenous nitric oxide alleviates high temperature induced oxidative stress in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seedlings by modulating the antioxidant defense and glyoxalase system

We investigated the protective role of exogenous nitric oxide (NO) in alleviating high temperature induced damages of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Pradip) seedlings. Heat treatment (38 °C) alone or in combination with 0.5 mM SNP (a NO donor) was applied with nutrient solution on 8-d-old hydroponically grown seedlings for a period of 24 h and 48 h. Heat stress significantly decreased the Chl ...

Biphasic effect of copper on growth, proline, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzyme activities of wheat (Triticum aestivum cv. Hasaawi) at early growing stage

The biphasic effects of Cu on the growth and some biochemical parameters of Hassawi wheat were studied. Hassawi wheat seeds were grown in various copper (Cu) levels (0, 2, 10, 20, 40, 80 and 100 mM) for 30 days. Cu was applied on soil as Cu2SO4.5H2O. The results showed that Cu concentration at 2 mM level promotes the growth and tested biochemical parameters of Hassawi wheat plants and can be co...

Physiological, Biochemical, Epigenetic and Molecular Analyses of Wheat (Triticum aestivum) Genotypes with Contrasting Salt Tolerance

Abiotic stress exerts significant impact on plant's growth, development, and productivity. Productivity of crop plants under salt stress is lagging behind because of our limited knowledge about physiological, biochemical, epigenetic, and molecular mechanisms of salt tolerance in plants. This study aimed to investigate physio-biochemical, molecular indices and defense responses of selected wheat...
